John Wesley Payne

From the honor roll of legendary Bay Area musicians which include Carlos Santana, Sly Stone and others returns Oakland's own hidden treasure songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist John Wesley Payne.

Being known as the "PRINCE" of the Bay Area because of his multiple abilities to write, produce, arrange and perform, Payne first broke onto the Billboard charts with his number one hit "She Just Can't help It". in addition to being a solo artist he is also behind the scenes as a songwriter and producer working with various labels and artist both nationally and locally.

Payne spent time being schooled first hand by some of the legends of funk by recording and performing with various artist including George Clinton, Larry Graham, Rick James, the late great keyboardist Merl Saunders of the Grateful Dead (who Payne toured with on bass) and many others.

A bucket list moment came to be when Payne got a call from PRINCE who called and asked him to fly out to Minnesota to jam with him and the NPG at Paisley Park studios for a week. This opened the door to many other oppourtunies . Members of Prince's other band the REVOLUTION can be seen regularly performing with John's band THE HURT from time to time authenticating his connection to the Minneapolis sound..

In tribute to all these great artist Payne will be welcomed back home for his first Oakland appearance with his band John Payne and The HURT to perform his Legends of Funk and Soul tour at Yoshis. The all-star band features many of the Bays top musicians along with some very special guest...

Carmen Jones

With presence, poise and a whole lot of Funk, Soul, Gospel & Rhythm & Blues, singer/songwriter Carmen Jones has the performance and uniquely "powerhouse" soulful vocals to hold your attention. Ms. Jones can take you all the way home with her own original R&B music, soulfully touching on love and societal challenges. She and her band, The DejaVu Band, will have you pulling out your best old (or new) school steps or you’ll be stepping the Carmen Jones way with the dance jam, ‘Microdancing’. The power and versatility of Jones’ vocal sound and her notable C3 to C6 range will transfer you to a place where all that matters is enjoying life through music.

The stage is a natural home to Ms. Jones where childhood music performances ignited the fire. A Berkeley, California native she developed her keyboard and singing talents while touring the California club scene with local band Sam Bostic & Circuitry. Over the years she honed her recording and live performance abilities as a member of female groups such as Soul de Pop and New Faces. After "going solo", Ms. Jones wrote and recorded her own songs; singing the lead and background vocals and laying all of the music tracks.

Performing with groups or simply as Carmen Jones has led her to the stages of the famous New Orleans House of Blues, the New Orleans Jazz Festival, Disney World, the Oakland Oracle Arena and even to Madrid, Spain. Ms. Jones has shared the stage and studio with Al B Sure, MC Hammer, Linda Ronstadt, Jeffrey Osborne, Jackson Browne, and local music natives PC Munoz, Derrick Hall, Master P and Dwayne Wiggins. Ms. Jones was featured singing an ">impromptu duet with Jamie Foxx, during the HBO Special “Jamie Foxx: I Might Need Security”.

Ms. Jones’ strong passion for music are continually inspired by her on-point “">Tribute to Teena Marie”, with rich renditions of songs praised by Teena Marie’s closest friends and devoted fans. She teaches Voice Lessons in the San Francisco Bay Area.
