Mads Tolling
Mads Tolling
Mads Tolling is a two-time Grammy Award-winning violinist, and he is the 2016 winner of the DownBeat Critics Poll Rising Star Violin Award. Mads is a former longtime member of Stanley Clarke’s Band and the Turtle Island Quartet. He has been featured on NPR’s Morning Edition, and he has performed over a thousand concerts worldwide, including the Library of Congress and the Newport Jazz Festival. Mads has appeared with Chick Corea, Ramsey Lewis, Kenny Barron, Paquito D’Rivera and Jean-Luc Ponty.

Mads released his latest hit recording, Mads Tolling & The Mads Men - Playing the 60s last year, and he has been touring the show worldwide ever since. The album has been a favorite amongst fans and critics alike and was in the top 30 on US Jazz Radio for two straight months, peaking at #5. Mads has created a fun and exciting program that is at once nostalgic as well as contemporary, as he reimagines classic songs from 1960s TV, film and radio. Repertoire ranges from “Mission Impossible” and “Meet the Flintstones” to “Georgia on My Mind,” “A Taste of Honey” and “All Along the Watchtower.”

Playing the 60s features several guest vocalists, and it has reconnected Mads with Spencer Day. Mads and Spencer performed for the first time at Herbst Theatre in San Francisco, when Spencer had his international breakthrough in 2006. Now twelve years later, Spencer is featured on Mads’ arrangement of Burt Bacharach’s “The Look of Love.”

#1 Billboard Recording Artist and versatile singer-songwriter-pianist, Spencer Day, has headlined venues as diverse as Birdland, The Hollywood Bowl and The Kennedy Center. Spencer got discovered on Star Search in the early 2000s, and he has since recorded for Concord Records and released six solo albums. Spencer is known for his stellar songwriting and his interpretations of the Great American Songbook, both of which will be on display at Yoshi’s.

This evening Mads will also feature a highly accomplished female vocalist. San Francisco Bay Area’s Tiffany Austin appeared suddenly on the national scene in 2015 with the album Nothing But Soul featuring Cyrus Chestnut, getting glowing reviews in DownBeat Magazine and All About Jazz. The fact that she had just graduated from UC Berkeley School of Law made her emergence that much more spectacular.

Mads, Spencer and Tiffany will make this a very special evening at Yoshi’s. If you’re Mad about Mads come on out!
