"Bassist and friend Marc Van Wageningen was hit by a train outside of Yoshi's on December 12. He is going to make it, but tragically he doesn't have health insurance. Whatever we make in the door at Yoshi's, I am giving 10% to help cover his health care costs".

Mads Tolling is a two-time Grammy Award-winning violinist, and he is this year's winner of the DownBeat Critics Poll Rising Star Award. He is a former longtime member of Stanley Clarke's Band and the Turtle Island Quartet.

Mads has been featured on NPR’s Morning Edition and in the Washington Post, and he has played with Kenny Barron, Ramsey Lewis and Paquito D’Rivera. In 2014 Mads was commissioned by Michael Morgan and Oakland Symphony to write a violin concerto, which was premiered at the Paramount Theatre to much fanfare in 2015.

Mads is making his new album "Playing the 60s" available for the first time at Yoshi’s this very special evening. With his quartet he has created a fun and exciting show that touches on the nostalgic as well as the contemporary. It includes timeless movie themes, popular TV classics, and celebrated songs ranging from “Mission Impossible”, “The Pink Panther” and “Meet The Flintstones” to “Georgia on My Mind” and “A Taste of Honey”.

As a burgeoning young master growing up in Copenhagen, listening to a Miles Davis cassette introduced Mads to the 60s sounds of Jazz, Soul and early R&B. Inspired to explore his own creative voice, the result is an exhilarating and thrilling musical adventure, with Mads guiding us to places we didn’t know a violin could go.

Joining Mads on this journey are his “Mads Men”: World-class musicians Colin Hogan on piano & accordion, Josh Thurston-Milgrom on bass and Eric Garland on drums.

Kenny Washington
"The thing is, Washington slays 'em wherever he performs. Standing not quite five-foot-two, he's an oversize talent who can scat with the harmonic daring and rhythmic command of a bebop saxophonist, croon with the simmering soul of Donny Hathaway, and interpret standards with such intelligence and emotional commitment it's like Rodgers and Hart wrote "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" with him in mind." -- Andrew Gilbert,

Recently dubbed “the Superman of the Bay Area jazz scene” by the San Francisco Chronicle, Kenny Washington is a jazz virtuoso who thrills audiences with his soulful interpretations, seemingly limitless range, and rapid-fire scatting. Ravi Coltrane has declared Kenny his favorite male vocalist, and Mark Murphy said in a Jazz Times interview that Kenny was the only contemporary male vocalist carrying on the tradition.
