Jazz vocalist, Nicolas Bearde, has won accolades from critics and jazz audiences worldwide for his 'velvet tone" and engaging performances. On this date, he returns to Yoshi's for the release of his latest album... celebrating the music of Nat "King" Cole.
His music has been critically acclaimed by Jazziz, JazzTimes, Jazz Week and All about Jazzand Nicolas'Sth solo album,"lnvitation'rose quickly to the Top 20 on the Jazz Week charts, becoming a Grammy contender in 5 categories.
Bearde first made his mark in jazz as part of Bobby McFerrins' revolutionary a cappella group'Voicestra'spending 15 plus years on the road with this unique and trend setting ensemble, while carving out his own solo career. His first and second albums, "Crossing the Line" and"All About Love" which blurred the lines between R&8, Blues and Jazz were released in the US and the UK (on the Expansion Records label) to much fanfare on both sides of the ocean.
His subsequent albums, "Live at Yoshi's - A Salufe to Lou" (2008) conjures up Lou Rawls spirit in song from his early blues, jazz and classic monologues to his hugely popular R&B hits that made him world-famous, followed by "Visions" (2013) - produced by the Bay Area's own, Larry Batiste... a vibrant, up-tempo and soulfully driven compilation of originals and standards that reflects the continuation of Beardes'lazzjourney. On his Sth solo outing, "lnvitation" (2016), produced and arranged by Grammy-winning pianist, Nat Adderley Jr., Nicolas came out swinging with both feet firmly planted in the straight-ahead jazz milieu, establishing himself as a powerful presence in the contemporary male jazz vocal category.
Bearde has performed at many of the most respected jazz festivals, clubs and concert halls throughout the world, from Beijing, China, Holland's North Sea Jazz, Montreaux, Switzerland and Moscow - to San Francisco, New York, Paris and lstanbul, and has toured, performed and recorded with a long list of lazz luminaries including Vincent Herring, Jeremy Pelt, Nat Adderley Jr, Alfonso Johnson, Nelson Braxton, Patrice Rushen, and Bernard Purdie to name a few.
"Smooth... soulful...deeply sensuous and romantic" - These are just a few words used to describe the music of Nicolas Bearde.
His silky baritone sound invites comparisons to Jon Lucien and Lou Rawls, and his new album re-imagines the timeless songs of one of his earliest influences, Nat "King" Cole. With supple phrasing, passionate delivery, and fresh arrangements by Josh Nelson, long-time pianist for the late Natalie Cole,
Bearde breathes new life into Nat’s trove of enduring classics which include “Sweet Lorraine”, “L-O-V-E”, “Straighten up and Fly Right”, and “Tenderly”.
