DESCRIPTION:TAKOYAKI 3 is a streamlined\, street-food-style version of trum
peter Ian Carey&rsquo\;s successful quintet\, featuring longtime collabora
tors Adam Shulman (of the Marcus Shelby Orchestra) on Hammond B3 organ and
Jon Arkin on drums. The recipe begins with a delicious batter of the jazz
tradition\, adds meaty chunks of original composition and improvisation\,
cooks &lsquo\;til golden brown\, and tops with a generous handful of swin
g (and mayonnaise). The group has been heard around the Bay Area at venues
including Yoshi&rsquo\;s Lounge\, The Actual Caf&eacute\;\, and the Garde
n Gate Creativity Center.\n\nIan Carey (trumpet\, leader) was born in Bing
hamton\, New York\, where\, at the age of six\, he was introduced to jazz
music by a performance by the legendary Slam Stewart at his elementary sch
ool. Twenty-some years later\, he&rsquo\;s still knee-deep in it. After st
udying classical trumpet at the University of Nevada (where he performed w
ith the Reno Philharmonic)\, Ian headed to New York\, where he studied wit
h jazz luminaries including Cecil Bridgewater\, Andrew Cyrille\, Reggie Wo
rkman\, Maria Schneider\, and Billy Harper. He also performed with the lik
es of Eddie Bert\, Rory Stuart\, and Ravi Coltrane\, and at venues includi
ng the Blue Note and Smalls. He led his own Brooklyn-based quartet for sev
eral years before his move to San Francisco in 2001. He has since been bus
y in the Bay Area jazz scene\, appearing with groups including the Contemp
orary Jazz Orchestra\, The Realistic Orchestra\, the Circus Bella All-Star
Band\, and 8 Legged Monster. In 2003\, he began gigging with the talented
musicians who were tobecome the Ian Carey Quintet\, and the group has sol
idified its improvisational chemistry in the years since. The group&rsquo\
 ;s first CD\, SINK/SWIM (2006) generated significant critical buzz (&ldquo
\;An exciting set of music with a heavy-hitting lineup of musicians&rdquo\
 ; &ndash\;Greg Bridges\, KCSM)\, and their follow-up\, Contextualizin&rsqu
o\; (2010)\, spent five weeks on the JazzWeek national Top 50 and appeared
on several critical Top 10 lists for 2010. His new album\, Roads &amp\; C
 odes (&ldquo\;Solid\, artful\, and smartly paced&rdquo\; &ndash\;Jazzwax.c
om)\, was released in February 2013. Ian is also an avid writer\, and blog
s regularly on music at his website\, iancareyjazz.com.\nAdam Shulman (org
an) has been a staple of the San Francisco jazz scene since he moved to th
e city in 2002. Before the move\, Adam was a student at UC Santa Cruz wher
e he studied with the great pianist Smith Dobson and the trumpeter/arrange
r Ray Brown. He received his degree in classical performance under the tut
elage of the Russian pianist Maria Ezerova. Currently\, Adam plays regular

the Boston area\, Jon Arkin (drums) began his studies of music and percuss
ion at an early age. His experiences playing in local ensembles led to his
attending the University of Miami School of Music\, where he studied drum
set performance and composition\, and won several awards for his participa
tion in the school's top jazz combos.\nAfter earning his degree in 1998\,
he relocated to the Bay Area. In addition to leading his own groups\, he h
as been busy as a freelance musician with many notable artists\, including
