DESCRIPTION:\n&ldquo\;There&rsquo\;s a physical electricity to Hargrove&rsq
uo\;s performance that is not terribly common in jazz.&rdquo\; &ndash\;Dav
 id Adler\nRoy Hargrove (trumpet\, flugelhorn)\nJustin Robinson (alto sax\,
  flute)\nSullivan Fortner (piano)\nAmeen Saleem (bass)\nQuincy Phillips (d
 rums)\nAs a trumpeter\, composer\, and an arranger\, Roy Hargrove has been
a mainstay of the contemporary music scene in a variety of formats for ne
arly two decades. Since his own emergence in the late &rsquo\;80s\, Hargro
ve has proved to be an adventurous and wide-ranging artist\, proudly immer
sed in the jazz tradition and yet continually striking out for new terrain
. Among his groups include the straight-ahead\, hard-bop Roy Hargrove Quin
tet and Crisol\, an Afro-Cuban ensemble.\n\nHargrove has also won Grammy&r
eg\; Awards for two vastly different projects. In 1997\, Roy&rsquo\;s Cuba
n-based band Crisol won the Best Latin Jazz Performance Grammy for the alb
um Habana. And in 2002\, Hargrove\, Herbie Hancock and Michael Brecker won
Best Instrumental Jazz Album\, Individual or Group\, for their three-way
collaboration Directions in Music.\n\nHargrove&rsquo\;s newest album Emerg
 ence\, released in 2009\, represents Hargrove's full-fledged emergence int
o the large ensemble idiom. Until this release\, his big band experience h
as been limited mostly to his appearances with the Dizzy Gillespie All-Sta
r Big Band\, with which he has most ably proved himself an heir to the lat
e trumpet legend's mantle.Emergence exhibits Hargrove in full flight as ca
ptain of his 19-piece ensemble. Arrangements have been furnished by barito
ne saxophonist Jason Marshall (the hard-bopping &quot\;Ms. Garvey\, Ms. Ga
rvey&quot\;)\, bass trombonist Max Siegel (a Kentonesque interpretation of
the Rodgers and Hart classic &quot\;My Funny Valentine&quot\;)\, the icon
ic Cuban pianist Jesus &quot\;Chucho&quot\; Valdes (&quot\;Mambo for Roy&q
uot\;)\, and Hargrove himself.\n\n&ldquo\;The Music world would be hard pr
essed to find another ambassador capable of traversing the worlds of strai
ght ahead swingin&rsquo\; and the funky underground better than Roy Hargro
 ve.&rdquo\; &ndash\; All about Jazz\nRoy Hargrove's facebook fanpage
