“Nothing short of SUPERB . . . seamless jazz with a cutting edge all the way through.” - Improvijazzation Nation Magazine

Andy Waddell was born and raised in the LA area. He studied Jazz guitar starting in middle school and later continued on to be one of the few undergrads in USC history to receive a scholarship to study in their world renowned Studio Jazz Guitar Department. As a youngster, he studied jazz with some of LA’s finest guitarists including Frank Potenza, Joe Jewell, Pat Kelly, Bruce Foreman, and Joe Diorio. Performing professionally since his teens, Andy has worked alongside countless jazz greats including, Grammy award winner Maria Schneider, Peter Erskine, Jim McNeely, Bill Watrous, Josh Nelson, Kendall Kay, Andy Martin, Edwin Livingston, and Kim Richmond to name a few.

Andy Waddell’s unique and edgy sound cuts through glass and turns heads no matter who he performs with. Over the years he has developed an intense style of writing and arranging that has truly become his own. His playing stands out as an extremely progressive approach to jazz that is rare to the west coast. His modern style of writing and arranging has been identified as incredibly deep both harmonically and melodically, while still being grounded in the roots of traditional jazz, with his broad and extensive vocabulary.

Waddell's group plays very progressive and cutting edge original music that makes for an extremely exciting and musically engaging experience. The virtuosity that is delivered both by the immensely compelling writing and flawlessly stellar performance is transcendent, and takes the listener on a beautiful journey of some of the best modern jazz that is both intellectually satisfying while still being lyrically accessible to the ear. Andy's first album as a leader entitled Sunset to 7 was released last year and enjoyed world wide success placing him on numerous top ten jazz charts and #35 in CMJ magazine, as well as one of the top 5 new artists also in CMJ magazine. He recorded his second album this year which will be released this summer featuring LA all stars Josh Nelson (piano), Tom Catanzaro (tenor), Dan Lutz (bass), and Aaron McLendon (drums).
