"O'Riley is a modern-day Liszt." ~Ethan Iverson, The Bad Plus
Wednesday, May 29
- 8pm $30
In the grand tradition of virtuosic pianists, Christopher O'Riley's
showmanship and iconoclast status make him the Franz Liszt of our time. In his new recording O'Riley's Liszt - just released on Oxingale Records, O'Riley delves into the transcriptions of that master interpreter, adding his own touches and insight to the music of Mozart, Wagner, Berlioz, Schubert and Schumann.
Since the triumphant release of True Love Waits, pianist Christopher
O'Riley's reimagining of works by Radiohead, Elliott Smith and Nick Drake have garnered critical accolades and international acclaim, including the only four-star review ever given by Rolling Stone to a Classical pianist. O'Riley has stretched the piano beyond conventional boundaries and his Liszt project is poised to be his latest unforgettable and sublime interpretation of the Classical canon.
Mr. O'Riley has taken his unique vision to both traditional classical music venues and symphonic settings, as well as to entirely new audiences on the radio, at universities and clubs. As host of the most popular classical music radio show ever, National Public Radio's From The Top, Mr. O'Riley works and performs with the next generation of brilliant young musicians, demonstrating to audiences that these young artists are as interesting and diverse in their personal lives as they are in their music-making. O'Riley also hosted the Emmy winning PBS series From the Top from Carnegie Hall.
