Yoshi's San Francisco Announces John Zorn Residency, August 26-28.

Tickets On Sale Now.

(SAN FRANCISCO, CA July 14) - Yoshi's is pleased to welcome back prolific saxophonist, composer and MacArthur fellow, John Zorn. After an unheralded six night residency in March of 2009, Zorn returns to Yoshi's San Francisco with six entirely different sets of ensembles, August 26 through August 28. This year's residency, entitled John Zorn's Bay Area Connection, will present Zorn in six unique settings alongside some of the Bay Area's finest improvisors.

Zorn's deep ties to the Bay Area date back to his first visit in 1974. His yearly visits have deepened his connection with local musicians and venues and many of his closest collaborators still live right here in the Bay Area. This special three night series showcases him performing with many of San Francisco's best musicians in improvisational units, and includes the world premiere performance of his tribute to the Bay Area Alhambra Love Songs, his first ever duo concert with Terry Riley and of course his legendary game piece Cobra, featuring an all-star Bay Area lineup. 2010 is a banner year for Zorn, as he plans on releasing at least one record per month in the calendar year.

Thursday, August 26's opening concert pairs Zorn with pioneering minimalist composer, Terry Riley. Zorn has long cited Riley as an significant influence. Inexplicably the two have never performed together as a duo. Thursday's 10pm performance pits Zorn alongside master guitarist (and Mills College professor) Fred Frith and vocalist/electronic maestro Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle). Frith and Zorn are considered two of the founding the fathers of New York's Downtown scene, their kinship and collaboration dates back to late 70's. The versatile vocalist/improviser, and another of Zorn's frequent collaborators, Mike Patton joins Frith and Zorn for a rare trio performance.

Friday, August 27 marks the debut performance of Alhambra Love Songs, Zorn's lyrical ode to the Bay Area. The Alhambra project is considered some of Zorn's most tranquil and melodic work. Fittingly the piano trio is made up entirely of Northern California-bred players; pianist Rob Burger (Tin Hat Trio, Rufus Wainwright), bassist Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Electric Masada) and drummer Kenny Wollesen (Bill Frisell, Sex Mob).

The late performance on Friday, August 27 is a rare appearance by Zorn's Aleph Trio. The trio fronted by Zorn (on alto saxophone) backed by Dunn and Wollesen composing a live score to the artist Wallace Berman's film, Aleph along with other shorts by Berman. The filmmaker's son,Tosh Berman will be on hand to introduce the piece.

On Saturday, August 28 Zorn teams with ROVA Saxophone Quartet, the Bay Area's stalwart improvisors. ROVA has been at the forefront of experimental music since forming in San Francisco over 30 years ago. The Quartet (made up of Bruce Ackley, Steve Adams, Larry Ochs and JonRaskin) have been frequent collaborators of Zorn.

For Saturday's finale Zorn will present his improvisational "game piece", Cobra. The rarely performed game is based not on a set of notes, but on a set of rules and cues/signals from the prompter (Zorn). It will feature some 14 players, including Frith, Patton, Trey Spruance (Secret Chiefs 3), Joan Jeanrenaud (Kronos Quartet), Scott Amendola, Wollesen, William Winant, Burger and many more.

Please join Yoshi's in welcoming the genre-busting John Zorn back to San Francisco for what is sure to be an unforgettable run of shows.
