DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Filipino American History Month this year with Jazz &
 ndash\; join us at the 5th Annual San Francisco Filipino American Jazz Fes
 tival October 12th and 13th at Yoshi&rsquo\;s Oakland and October 14th at 
 Yoshi&rsquo\;s San Francisco. This three-day celebration will feature lege
 ndary jazz master\, Archie Shepp\; Afro-Filipino King of Latin Soul\, Joe 
 Bataan\; winner of the 2008 London International Jazz Vocal Competition\, 
 Mon David\; and Jo Canion\, the SF Bay Area&rsquo\;s Grande Dame of Pinay 
 Jazz.\nMON DAVID is recognized as one of the most respected singers in the
  Philippines\, as well as a remarkable songwriter and musician. He was the
  drummer and vocal coach of the country&rsquo\;s most enduring pop icons &
 ndash\; the Apo Hiking Society for seven years until he decided to pursue 
 a solo career.\nIn 2006 he was the Grand Prize Winner at the First London 
 International Jazz Competition for Vocalist. Recently relocated in Los Ang
 eles\, Mon is now part of the LA Jazz scene with regular performances in t
 he area. He has appeared at the LA FilAm Annual Jazz Festival. Currently w
 ith FreeHam Records\, he is scheduled to release a CD in the Fall of 2009.
  Mon David shares with the whole world his unique artistry and his philoso
 phy that music that comes from the heart can indeed heal\, build\, inspire
  and unite.\n\nJO CANION\, also known to friends and family as &ldquo\;Jos
 ie&rdquo\;\, has been a pioneer in the jazz world since the early 1950s. S
 he comes from a musical family and discovered early that singing came natu
 rally to her.\n\nShe toured the West Coast in the late 1950s and 1960s wit
 h &ldquo\;The Preludes&rdquo\; a jazz vocal quartet that included her brot
 her\, pianist and singer\, the late Rudy Tenio. She was encouraged by her 
 other brother and jazz musician Jimmie Tenio to pursue a career in music. 
 Flip Nu&ntilde\;ez\, noted Filipino jazz pianist and singer also encourage
 d Josie to play the piano.\n\nHer performance credits include vocalizing w
 ith Flip Nu&ntilde\;ez\, George Duke\, Smith Dobson\, and Eddie Duran. She
  performed at various venues in San Francisco including the Fairmont Hotel
 \, Quiet Storm\, and Pier 39. After two years at the Hilton in Irvine\, CA
  she returned to Stockton. Ms. Canion was a featured artist at the Stockto
 n Waterfront Jazz Festival. Currently Jo performs at the Wine and Roses Sp
 a and Hotel in Lodi.\n\n
