DESCRIPTION:The Monterey Jazz Festival&reg\; is pleased to announce that th
 eir national high school all-star big band\, the Next Generation Jazz Orch
 estra\, will make their debut at Yoshi&rsquo\;s San Francisco at 8:00pm on
  Monday\, July 25.\n\nCelebrating its 40th anniversary in 2011\, and selec
 ting the best and brightest high school jazz musicians in the country each
  year\, the current edition of the band features twenty-one high school mu
 sicians from California\, Florida\, Oregon\, New York\, New Jersey\, Penns
 ylvania\, and Toronto.\n\nThe 2011 Next Generation Jazz Orchestra also fea
 tures six Bay Area musicians\, including Calvin Barthel\, (trombone\, Alba
 ny High School\, Albany)\; Connor Anderson (baritone saxophone\, FAME Char
 ter School\, Concord)\; Kai Devitt-Lee (guitar\, Healdsburg High School\, 
 Healdsburg)\; Robert Sheppard (tenor saxophone\, Amador Valley High School
 \, Pleasanton)\; Chris Palowitch (bass trombone\, Amador Valley High Schoo
 l\, Pleasanton)\; and Josh Shpak (trumpet\, Northgate High School\, Walnut
  Creek).\n\nCreated in 1971 as a part of the Monterey Jazz Festival's cont
 inuing commitment to jazz education and selected through an application pr
 ocess during the Next Generation Jazz Festival each spring\, former member
 s of the Orchestra include pianists Benny Green and Patrice Rushen\; bassi
 st Larry Grenadier\, drummer Chad Wackerman\, saxophonists Joshua Redman\,
  Donny McCaslin\, Eric Marienthal\, and Dave Koz\; trombonist Andy Martin\
 , trumpeters Gilbert Castellanos and Ambrose Akinmusire\; and big band lea
 der Gordon Goodwin to name a few. In the past\, the band has been under th
 e leadership of Ladd McIntosh\, Don Schamber\, Benny Golson\, Bill Berry\,
  and many more. Now under the tutelage of Paul Contos\, the renowned saxop
 honist and flautist who serves as the director of the Orchestra\, the ense
 mble is dedicated to the study and performance of the most challenging big
  band literature available\, and has received worldwide acclaim.  Previous
  tour destinations for the Orchestra have included performances at festiva
 ls and venues across Canada\, Japan\, Australia\, and Europe. In recent ye
 ars\, the band has performed at the North Sea\, Umbria\, Toronto\, and Mon
 treal Jazz Festivals\; Jazz at Lincoln Center\, the Jazz Standard\, the Ke
 nnedy Center\, and many more.\n\nThe Yoshi&rsquo\;s San Francisco performa
 nce on July 25 is the second show of the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra&rs
 quo\;s 9-show\, 11-day 2011 summer tour of the West Coast. Other performan
 ces include stops in Carmel (Carmel Bach Festival with Joe Lovano\, July 2
 4)\; Seattle (Jazz Alley\, July 26-27)\, Port Townsend\, Washington (Centr
 um Jazz Festival\, July 29-30)\; Monmouth\, Oregon (Mel Brown Jazz Camp\, 
 July 31)\; San Diego (The Neurosciences Institute\, presented by the La Jo
 lla Athenaeum Music &amp\; Arts Library\, with special guest Gilbert Caste
 llanos\, August 1)\; and Los Angeles (Vitello&rsquo\;s Jazz Club\, August 
 2).\n\nThe Next Generation Jazz Orchestra will also make their traditional
  Sunday appearance at the 54th Monterey Jazz Festival on September 18\, 20
 11\, with former band alumni and 2011 Artist-In-Residence Joshua Redman\, 
 Benny Green and Donny McCaslin sitting as special guests.\nThe Monterey Ja
 zz Festival and the Berklee College of Music are also pleased to announce 
 that Next Generation Jazz Orchestra member and trombonist\, Calvin Barthel
 \, from Albany High School in Albany\, California\, is the 2011 winner of 
 the Jimmy Lyons Scholarship at the Berklee College of Music\, a major musi
 c education prize. The full-tuition scholarship is named in honor of the M
 onterey Jazz Festival&rsquo\;s late founder\, James L. (Jimmy) Lyons\, who
  began the festival in 1958.\n&nbsp\;\nMajor support of the 2011 Next Gene
 ration Jazz Orchestra comes from the Hearst Foundations\, and from the Jos
