Straight Ahead Jazz - Best of the Best
As most of you know, Yoshi’s was built on straight ahead jazz, and for the next few weeks, Yoshi’s Oakland has a stellar JAZZ line up.
It starts with Charles Lloyd and his new quartet on Wednesday and Thursday. Charles has played Yoshi’s many times over the years, and his new group is one of the finest he’s had. Jason Moran on piano has a great solo career, and is one of the most innovative young pianists out there. Ruben Rogers on bass has been here many times with a bunch of great players including Diane Reeves, Joshua Redman, and others…. Eric Harland will be on drums. He has an incredible resume playing with EVERYBODY.
After Charles, pianist Geri Allen comes in with an all star band paying tribute to Eric Dolphy, Friday – Sunday. Geri has put together a stellar group featuring Oliver Lake on alto sax, Don Byron on Clarinets, Dwayne Dolphin on bass, and the amazing Jeff ‘tain’ Watts on drums. Geri Allen is an innovative, creative, exciting player, and this group promises to be one of the high points of the year here at Yoshi’s. I can’t say enough about this band, Oliver Lake a founding member of the World Saxophone Quartet, has a resume that reads like a who’s who of jazz. Don Byron is THE clarinet player of the millennium. He is a forward thinking player, always growing and always doing something new. Dwayne Dolphin is a rock steady bass player who got his start playing with Wynton Marsalis and has since played with John Hicks, Nancy Wilson, and Stanley Turrentine. Finally, Jeff Watts rounds out the group. ‘Tain has been a Yoshi’s favorite for years playing with McCoy Tyner, George Cables, Branford Marsalis, and many others. DO NOT MISS THIS ONE!!
Next Tuesday and Wednesday we have Dave Liebman and his quartet. Dave first came to public view playing with Miles Davis. He recorded for ECM in the 70’s and had a great group called Lookout Farm. He has since played with EVERYBODY, including Elvin Jones, John Scofield, Chick Corea, Bob Moses, Pat Metheny, and a long list of other people. His current group has been together since 1991, and features Vic Juris on guitar. They just won the equivalent of a Grammy in Germany for best Jazz Album.
I feel so great about this line up, that I make you the following offer: If you buy tickets to any of the above shows, and you don’t like it, send me an email, and I’ll put you on the guest list for another show with similar prices! I know things are tough right now, money is tight and you have to watch what you spend it on…. So here’s a win – win for you…
There is more great jazz coming too, the John Abercrombie Quartet, The Chick Corea Trio, Avishai Cohen, Brian Blade, Hiromi, Pharoah Sanders and more!
