A Word From Yoshi's San Francisco Artistic Director

Hi Yoshi's People:

It's an exciting time to be back at Yoshi's, booking my first month at
the beautiful new Yoshi's San Francisco.  We've put together some
unique billings and rare one-off performances that we hope will bring
you down to the Fillmore this month.

You'll notice that two of our special events feature the legendary,
multi-Grammy winning bassist/composer Charlie Haden. We've
collaborated a number of times in the past, where we recommend other
musicians to join him or he recommends other folks for a 'special
event' multi-night run and we agree to dive in.  The difference this
time is that he'll be doing it twice in one week, with two very
different groups. If anyone can bridge these gaps, Mr. Haden can. The
first group featuring Charlie, vibraphone grandmaster Bobby
Hutcherson, and the elegant pianist George Cables we're calling "Three
Friends," because they're all old pals, going back to the 50s. But
they've never played together, so this will be sweet treat.

Then, shortly after this ends, Mr. Haden will perform in another trio,
alongside the fiery Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba and the
sweet-toned saxophonist Lee Konitz.  Again, this grouping will meet
onstage at Yoshi's for the first time, willing and able to tackle a
wide array of music as they've each explored the musical realms of
bebop, ballads, and the avant garde. This, too, will be an event to
remember.

We've also put together a brand new festival called the "Go Left Fest:
Where Creative Arts Collide" intended to showcase some of the most
creative and adventurous improvisors, authors and composers "out
there." The festival will feature performances by, among others:
legendary 85 year-old Sun Ra Arkestra leader and saxophonist Marshall
Allen, noted author Ishmael Reed, pianist Matthew Shipp, trombonist
Roswell Rudd, drummer Sunny Murray, pianist Myra Melford-Mark Dresser
duo, bassist Joe Morris, clarinetist/saxophonist Beth Custer,
saxophonist Oluyemi Thomas and more. We hope this two day extravaganza
will lead to more down the road.

While all of this is exciting, this is just the beginning. We will
strive to present unique and interesting musical projects to you, our
Bay Area family. Thanks for supporting live music, wherever you find
it.
