Oakland native, Pianist/M.C./Producer/Band-Director, Kev Choice is a multi-faceted artist who's unique skills set and diverse influences have compelled audiences worldwide. Having a Master's Degree in Music-(Piano Performance), Kev brings a high level of musicianship into the context of live Hip-Hop music, blended seamlessly with elements of jazz, classical, soul, and futuristic funk. Raised in Oakland, Kev began taking piano lessons in junior high and was soon accepted into the prestigious Young Musicians Program at UC Berkeley. Kev went on to obtain a Bachelor's Degree from Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans, and a Master's Degree from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. After establishing himself as one of the most sought after keyboardist on the Bay Area scene, Kev began touring professionally as with a diverse list of artist such as of Lauryn Hill, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Too Short, Zion I, Goapele, LyricsBorn, Martin Luther, Dwele, and most recently with The Coup. He was named "Best Musician" and "Most Multi-Talented Artist" by the East Bay Express in 2008 and 2009 respectfully, and also has been nominated 3 times for "Best R&B/Funk Artist" by SF Weekly. Keyboard Magazine recently featured Kev as "A Keyboard Hero to Watch" saying his live show possessed elements of Joe Zawinul like fusion, opera, and foot stomping funk. One blogger called Kev Choice and his band "the most musical hip-hop group ever."
Having formed his own band, Kev Choice Ensemble, in 2007, Kev Choice began to focus on giving the world his unique sound and vision, presenting a powerful stage show that crosses genres and stretches boundaries. Kev and his band have been a crowd favorite in Oakland, having played at Art &Soul Festival, Uptown Unveiled, Best Of The EastBay Express Party, and countless other events. He has opened for artist such as Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Digable Planets, Blackilicious, Omar, and numerous others. Kev Choice is an M.C. that can deliver conscious, witty, socially relevant, and passionate lyrics, while playing keys with the skill of a seasoned pianist. Having produced his own music for over 10 years, including his album "The Power Of Choice", his Mixtape "The Bailout" and his web series "Daily Dosage", Kev is currently working on his double album that will be half instrumental jazz influenced and half Hip-Hop influenced.
This will be Kev Choice's 4th headlining show at Yoshi's and will feature some of the Bay Area's best up and coming musicians and vocalist. The ensemble consist of up to 15 pieces including string section, horn section, rhythm section, and vocalist, all lead by Kev Choice on grand piano, synths, and lead vocals. Kev will showcase his pianism a lot more in this show, doing solo piano works and small combo pieces. He will be premiering new works off his forthcoming project, and also excerpts from his Hip-Hopera, "The Chosen One."
