Jair Oliveira
It is rare that a 34 year old can boast twenty-eight years of success, but Jair Oliveira is exceptional. One of the hottest stars in Brazil today, he is equally renowned as a performer as he is a composer and producer.
Firmly rooted in samba but well-versed in jazz, R&B, electronic, bossa nova and funk, Jair’s sound is progressive while remaining earthy and grounded. It pushes past clichés yet is unmistakably Brazilian. His arrangements are complex and edgy, his lyrics, clever and sensitive, his voice, gentle and genuine, and his presentation, authentic yet conveyable to foreign audiences.
An Early Start
Son of Brazil’s legendary singer, Jair Rodrigues, Oliveira began his career at just six years of age, recording the song “Deus Salvador” on his father’s self-titled album (Jair Rodrigues de Oliveira 1981). The following year he performed with his father in the renowned Festival of San Remo, Italy. Their duet Io e Te, hit Billboard charts and the video of their RAI TV performance ran throughout Brazil. So at 7, he was invited to join the hit children’s band/ TV program A Turma do Balão Mágico and recorded three albums with the group, which sold more than 10 million copies. During this time, he also released a solo album, La Casa Dei Gioccatolli, an Italian version of the national classic A Casa de Brinquedos (Italy 1983). Known by most Brazilians as Jairzinho (little Jair), he recorded four more albums in his teen years, and toured throughout Latin America before heading to the US to study at the Berklee College of Music. He graduated in 1988, Summa Cum Laude, with a double degree in Music Production & Engineering and Music Business.
Forming of the New Vanguard
Upon his return to São Paulo, Oliveira established with partners his own music production company called S de Samba. During this time, he and his peers—fellow children of MPB masters, formed a collective: the Projeto Artistas Reunidos, which included Jair and his sister Luciana Mello; Pedro Mariano, the son of Elis Regina and Cesar Camargo Mariano; Wilson Simoninha and Max De Castro, sons of Wilson Simonal; and Daniel Carlomagno. For two years, the collective ruled the nightclub scene in São Paulo, reviving the bohemian ambience of their parents’ time. Major record label Trama took note and signed each of the artists. In the following years, Jair released four solo albums: Dis’Ritmia (Trama Records1999), Outro (Trama 2002), 3.1 (Trama 2003), 3.2 (Trama), and one group album Projecto Artistas Reunidos 100% Show (Trama 2000). He was the producer for all five of these.
He toured this music throughout Europe and the Americas, playing in such prestigious institutions as the Benny More Festival in Cuba (1999), Lincoln Center’s Brazil Fest (2001), and the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland (2003).
