MIKE PHILLIPS plus Joanna Marie

April 17, 2013

Soulful smooth jazz alto-sax of Hidden Beach Recordings

I was offstage, listening to Michael Phillips take his solo. I was thinking ‘Wow, listen to those people responding, and all he’s doing is playing a saxophone.’ They can feel that what he’s doing is real. So many shows now…they are so dead. But here’s one man breathing into an instrument, and the whole room feels alive. It made me want to rise up to that level when I came back onstage.” --- Prince, Rolling Stone Magazine

Music superstar Prince knows what audiences around the world also know. When Mike Phillips puts his saxophone to his lips, magic is about to happen. Experts know greatness. That’s why Phillips is the only musician in the world to have recorded and toured with the legendary “Big Three” of American soul music: Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Prince.

But you don’t have to be a music deity to appreciate Phillips gifts. In a short time, the New York native has exploded on the world music scene becoming the jazz man with hip-hop flavor known for blowing away audiences on stage, television and with chart-topping recordings.

Phillips and his soulful yet funky grooves brought standing ovations at the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival and the inaugural balls for Presidents Clinton and Obama. And his television performances on the Grammys, the Soul Train Awards and as host of his own show Mikes World on the Centric and BET television stations thrilled millions of viewers. Phillips also served as musical director and host of another popular BET program Lyric Café.

His recordings “You Have Reached Mike Phillips,” “Uncommon Denominator” and “MP3” won rave reviews  from music critics and scored in the top ten of the Billboard jazz music rankings. Phillips was also chief architect on the seminal Hidden Beach Unwrapped series which sold more than 300,000 units worldwide thanks to its brilliant fusion of jazz and hip-hop.

It is Mike Phillips' broad appeal that has also made him a highly-sought after corporate spokesman/performer across several brands. Whether the acclaim comes from superstars like Prince or everyday folks in a concert audience, the message is clear - Mike Phillips has forged a sweet groundbreaking sound for a new generation of music fans across the world. And the world likes what it is hearing.

Joanna has an affinity for the rhodes and the drums. If she wasn't a singer or pianist, she'd want to be Bernard Purdie or James Jamerson. As a child, Joanna sang songs from Paula Abdul's album Forever Your Girl on her parent's coffee table in between fervent sessions of practicing classical piano music. She fell in love with Chicago (the band) before she discovered Stevie Wonder, and Carole King's Tapestry was the album that inspired Joanna to learn how to sing and play piano at the same time. Joanna studied jazz when she finished high school and started touring internationally with bands after finishing her studies. She has recorded two albums, Through The Dark (2010) and Kaleidoscope (2013). Both albums credit Joanna as a songwriter, music arranger and producer.  She will be touring California and Western Canada in the Spring of 2013.
