Chris Amberger's dexterity on the bass has travelled wide and deep. Many remember him as the house bassist at the Keystone Korner in San Francisco, ferociously pushing the limits of his instrument while maintaining a strong groove with the likes of Sam Rivers, Art Pepper, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Elvin Jones, Freddie Hubbard, Dexter Gordon, and Horace Silver.
He has toured Europe with Art Blakely and the Jazz Messengers, South America with Cal Tjader, the U.S. with Rosemary Clooney, and Africa with Bombole. Compelled to explore and excel, Amberder is known for his sensitive interaction with other musicians and vocalists, as well as his breadth of musical interest.
He plucks and bows a variety of acoustic basses, as well as electric, freshly and skillfully exploring jazz, funk, blues, pop, and classical with an ebullient stage presence. Starting his career with a Downbeat scholarship to Berklee College of Music, awarded NEA composition grants and nominated for several Best Bassist Awards, Amberger continues to play jazz festivals, clubs, and recording dates as a leader or a sideman.
