SANJU celebrates the 30th anniversary of the first Asian American Jazz Festival (AAJF) held over Labor Day weekend in 1981. SANJU will feature a new jointly commissioned extended work by Anthony Brown and Mark Izu--who performed together at the first AAJF--to honor musician/educator George Yoshida who played Jazz in the internment camps and is a mentor and role model for Brown and Izu. In addition to a performance of this new work and others by the Asian American Orchestra, SANJU will also have an exhibition of 30 years of posters, artwork and photos, and a symposium with the AAJF founders Paul Yamazaki and George Leong, and curators Mark Izu and Francis Wong, moderated by Dr. Brown and held at the FJHC.

We hope to present SANJU as the Asian American Orchestra's fourth annual home season concert on Sunday, September 11th (the anniversary of the founding of the Asian American Orchestra).
