Lounge: Global Movement w/ Son Santa Clara
September 01, 2010
Formed in 1997 by guitarist, trecero Robert Bozina, Son Santa Clara is dedicated to the music of Cuba's eastern provinces (e.g. Son). A result of Bozina's lengthy collaboration with Cuba's musical institutions ( licensed academic research) and particularly with the Conservatorio Esteban Salas in Santiago de Cuba, Bozina hand picked a dynamic group of young musicians for Son Santa Clara mainstays. All did licensed research, studied, and performed in Cuban venues including the Casa da Trova in Santiago and Guantanamo.
Along with vocalists Leticia Vasquez, Esmeralda Muniz, Olivia Rodriguez, and Jenevieve Francisco, Waide Hicks is guitarist, Phil Herrera plays bass and currently Remy Spiro is on bongo with Rogelio Kendelan Nordet of Guantanamo sitting in on Conga. The group features flutist/soloist Carmen Bozina who studied extensively in Cuba ( licensed) and performed with that country's legendary Estudiantina Invasora ( Inaudis Paisan, director). In 2009, she performed & recorded in Ghana, Africa ("HighLife and Cuban Son with Edward Mensah Jr., reggae and "Afro Beat" with the Ghanaian group "Bigshot".) However, like all in the group, it is Cuban Son that constitutes her "raison d etre". Recent performances of Son Santa Clara include the New England Conservatory (La Herencia Latina) and UCLA's Schoenberg Hall ("Worldstock"). The group just returned from a month long tour of Cuba: a cultural exchange licensed by both the US and Cuban governments through attorney/producer Bill Martinez.
