DESCRIPTION:\n\nNicholas Payton is widely considered one of the greatest ar
tists of our time. Hailed as a virtuoso \nbefore he was even out of high s
chool\, his maturation and talent has earned him praise and \naccolades\,
as well as insured his place in musical history. \n \nWhen he was barely
in his 20s\, Nicholas Payton made his major-label recording debut as a
leader with From This Moment (Verve). Since then\, Payton has consistently
  committed himself to \ndeveloping his distinct voice.\n \nHe says: As a m
usician\, as an artist\, youre always trying to zero in on the bulls eye a
s a \nmeans of becoming a better version of yourself. Ive been able to fin
d the kind of music thats \nmore inclusive of all of my life. The approach
and the ideas of my music have become more \nsingular\, more cohesive. I
have no agenda in terms of a specific genre or style\, only to be true to
 who I am.\n \nNicholas Payton was born in New Orleans\, Louisiana\, into a
musical family. Encouraged by his \nmother\, a pianist and vocalist\, and
his father the legendary bassist\, composer and educator \nWalter Payton\
, Nicholas showed talent for music at a very early age. He received his fi
rst \ntrumpet at age four and by age nine was sitting-in with local bands
including the Young Tuxedo \nBrass Band. By the age of 12\, he was a memb
er of the All Star Brass Band that performed and \ntoured extensively. As
he grew up and studied\, Nicholas successfully learned how to play several
\ninstruments. In addition to being an accomplished trumpeter\, Nicholas
 plays piano\, bass\, drums\, \ntuba\, trombone\, clarinet and saxophone\,
et al. During his high school years\, Payton attended the \nNew Orleans C
enter for Creative Arts to study with Clyde Kerr Jr. and after graduation

 ayton (1997\, Verve).\n \nSpanning a multitude of musical genres\, Payton
has composed and arranged\, performed and \nrecorded with his own groups i
 n many settings\, including solo\, duo\, trio\, quartet\, quintet\, sextet

, is the first for his own imprint\, BMF \nRecords . Recorded at the histo
 ric Washington\, D.C. club\, Bohemian Caverns\, on November \n3\, 2012\, t
he album features a blistering set that captures Payton's now renowned pro
wess on the \ntrumpet while simultaneously playing the Fender Rhodes pian
 o. His genius and unmistakable \noriginality is on wide display for this r
 ecording.\n \nThe hashtag\, #BAM\, stands for Black American Music. The #B
AM movement created by \nNicholas\, states the revolutionary\, yet evident
\, idea that music of the Black American diaspora is \nmore similar than d
issimilar. Black American Music speaks of his and all music descending \nf
 rom the Black American experience\, including spirituals\, gospel\, blues\
 , so-called jazz and soul. \nA prolific writer\, the genesis of the #BAM m
ovement was in reaction to a blog post on \nNovember 27\, 2011 entitled:
On Why Jazz Isn't Cool Anymore. \n \nLike the Ghanaian Sankofa bird in the
BMF logo\, it is Paytons mission to go back in history to \nextract the r
ichness and lost knowledge of the past in order to elevate todays consciou
sness. \nHailed as The Savior of Archaic Pop\, Payton is rooted in traditi
on\, yet isnt stuck there. His \nlifes work is to dismantle the status quo
and to subvert mediocrity by giving rise to quality.
