 \, funk and jazz. The Afro-German bassist-composer\, who considers Oakland
  his home\, is internationally recognized for his pioneering work in the J
 ohn McLaughlin Trio and the super-jam-band Garaj Mahal. An international a
 ll-star ensemble will bring a brand new body of music to the Yoshis Oaklan
 d stage\, infused with poetry and exquisite instrumental passages. Tonight
 s concert is an exceptional showcase of talent\, not to be missed by fans 
 of daring new music\, earth-shaking rhythms or an all-around terrific perf
 ormance.\n\nMichael McClure\, a founding member of the Beat Generation\, g
 ave his first poetry reading at age 22 at the legendary Six Gallery event 
 in San Francisco\, where Allen Ginsberg first read 'Howl'. The Los Angeles
  Times characterized McClure as 'The role model for Jim Morrison.'  McClur
 e has been featured in several films\, among them Scorcese's The Last Walt
 z\, and Beyond The Law by Norman Mailer. He has received numerous awards\,
  including a Guggenheim Fellowship\, an Obie Award for Best Play\, an NEA 
 grant\, the Alfred Jarry Award\, and a Rockefeller grant for playwriting. 
 McClure has written twenty plays and musicals which are performed in the U
 .S. and abroad. His songs include\, among others\, the immortal Mercedes B
 enz\, popularized by Janis Joplin. His most recent two collections of poet
 ry are Mysteriosos and Other Poems (New Directions ) and Of Indigo and Saf
 fron: New and Selected Poems (University of California Press\, 2010).  Tod
 ay McClure is more active than ever\, writing and performing his poetry at

  Chuck Rainey.\n\nDrummer Deszon Claibourne flawlessly integrates the styl
 es of straight-ahead jazz\, funk\, hip-hop and world music\; his skills we
 re finely honed after completing studies with master drummers Billy Cobam\
 , James Levi\, Barry Jekowsky\, Kenneth Nash and Ralph Humphrey. Performan
 ces and recording experience include engagements with Peter Apfelbaum\, An
 gela Bofil\, Les McCann\, Dr. Lonnie Smith Omar Sosa\, Robben Ford\, Boz S
 caggs\, Greg Howe\, Ernie Watts and Tom Scott.\n\nRasaki Aladokun\, master
  of the West-African talking drum\, is a superb all-round percussionist as
  well. The charismatic Stevie Wonder- and Bob Marley-recording artist hail
 s from a long family tradition of talking drum masters in Nigeria and he b
