DESCRIPTION:The Larry Vuckovich East European Hard-Bop/Post-Bop Quintet fea
tures the front line of Ilya Lushtak\, Russian-born\, New York-based hard-
bop/post-bop guitarist and Rob Roth\, Philadelphia-born tenor saxophonist
of Russian descent\, who lived for many years in St. Petersburg. They brin
g an Eastern European sensibility to the music of hard-bop/post-bop giants
 : John Coltrane\, Dexter Gordon\, Joe Henderson\, Wes Montgomery\, Horace
Silver\, Sonny Clark\, and Grant Green. They will also play originals from
the Yugoslavian-born leader\, jazz pianist Larry Vuckovich. Adding to the
authenticity will be special guest Eric Golub\, globe-trotting original v
iolinist on Larrys pioneering world music/jazz LP\, Blue Balkan (1980). I
ts reissue with new material\, Blue Balkan: Then & Now\, was named one of
the top CDs of 2002 by Village Voice music critic Gary Giddins. The hot rh
ythm team features virtuoso bassist Jeff Chambers\, and drummer Clarence B
ecton\, now based in the Netherlands\, who along with Larry\, worked with
vocalese master Jon Hendricks in the Bay Area\, and was part of Jons long-
running Evolution of the Blues show. The Yoshis concert continues Larrys 7
5th birthday celebration series.\n\nLarry Vuckovich has won acclaim from c
ritics and jazz audiences for his deeply imaginative style and repertoire
heard at prestigious North American and European jazz clubs\, concert hall
s and festivals. He is equally at home in world music/classically influenc
ed modal jazz as he is with hard-swinging bebop\, post-bop\, contemporary
jazz\, and down-home blues. The New York Times notes that his unique outlo
ok and collection of influences &ldquo\;set him apart from most pianists w
ho are heard regularly in New York&rdquo\;. The Village Voice comments on
his &ldquo\;book of piano gems that will keep you guessing.&rdquo\; The To
ronto Globe and Mail calls him &ldquo\;a musician who sits apart from the
rest by virtue...of his taste for both the exotic and the exquisite.&rdquo
