The award-winning Jazzschool Studio Bands are advanced-level high school ensembles dedicated to the study and performance of big band jazz. Comprised of some of the San Francisco Bay Area's top high school musicians, the Jazzschool Studio Bands have established themselves as two of the Bay Area’s top ensembles of their kind. Since their creation in 2006 by director Keith Johnson, the bands have received several awards, high praises and critical acclaim for their exciting programming, detailed interpretation and energetic performances. The group has traveled and performed in venues throughout the United States including the 2007 Heritage Music Festival in New York City, the 2008 Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow, Idaho, the 2008 and 2009 Monterey Jazz Festival Next Generation Festival in Monterey, CA, in addition to performances in Seattle, WA and Julliard School of Music in New York City.

In April of this year, the Jazzschool Studio Bands were selected as finalists to compete in the 2009 Next Generation Festival, presented by the Monterey Jazz Festival. The Jazzschool bands captured 1st and 3rd place in the Conglomerate Big Band Division where they competed against groups from Portland, Oregon; San Diego; Nanao, Japan; and San Francisco. Their first-place finish guarantees the Studio Band ‘A’ the opportunity to perform at this year’s Monterey Jazz Festival in September!
