There is no need for introductions; the members of Legally Blynd have a combined total of 70 plus years of professional experience. Although the oldest member of the band is 32, the five core band members - John “Jubu” Smith, Eric Smith, Errol Cooney, Chris Johnson and Carl Wheeler - collectively have lent their talents to at least 25 gold, platinum and multi-platinum albums. Individually, they have toured the world with more than 30 different artists who consistently sell out packed arenas and stadiums. There is no other new band so poised for success such as Legally Blynd.
The name Legally Blynd is unique by definition. The band feels that if you weren’t able to see and all you could do was listen, you would hear the sweet simplistic soul of the music that touches your heart and mind. Legally Blynd steps into the spotlight ready to fill a void in today’s music. There is no need to get ready for them, you already hear the music, you just didn’t know the name.
Jubu started playing bass at age five, and at nine he picked up the guitar. Like most of his peers, he began playing in the church doing traditional Gospel. By the time he reached high school, he was playing in the well known Berkeley High Music Program under the tutelage of renowned music director, Charles Hamilton.
In 1990 Jubu began working with neighborhood friends, Raphael Saadiq and Dwayne Wiggins, two members of the platinum group Tony Toni Tone. Jubu joined the group before the release of The Revival (Wing/Mercury 1990) and started his groundbreaking career. On the Sons of Soul (Wing/Mercury 1993) album, Jubu finally crossed over as a songwriter and producer. He played in the band for eight years and recorded four albums with the group. In 1998, Jubu’s recognition as one of the best guitar players in the world began when he toured with Whitney Houston on her “My Love Is Your Love” tour. During that time, he moved to Los Angeles, spending every available moment penning songs for other artists. Jubu has written songs for Jody Whatley, Kenny Latimore, Boys to Men, CeCe Winans , 8 Ball and MJG, Toni Braxton, Art & Soul, Mary Mary , 702, Kelly Price, Tamia , Mario and Luther Vandross , including his Grammy nominated song “Take You Out Tonight.”
