Dhafer Youssef, a Tunisian composer, vocalist, and master Oud player, who has made his musical base in Europe comes to Oakland Yoshi’s for the first time this February. Dhafer’s music is strongly rooted in Sufi tradition while other influences, such as an affinity for Indian elements and the incorporation of Arabic lyricism, all while still approaching improvisation with a jazz sensibility that shows strongly in his work. Dhafer’s contributions on Norwegian Jazz artist Bugge Wesseltoft album FiLM iNG speak to Dhafer Youssef’s definition of eastern and western musical crossover.
