Comedian Don Reed’s (EAST 14TH, HBO, Cosby Show, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno) "THE KIPLING HOTEL - THE 80's" is the sequel to Don's smash show EAST 14th - the longest running solo show in East Bay Area history. In this next chapter the true tales continue of a young man raised in Oakland by his mother and extra strict stepfather - who moved in with his real father only to discover he was a pimp. But the pimp pushed Don toward higher education and he ends up with a partial scholarship to UCLA. (Partial translates to "not enough money"). And so after failed turns as a gigolo and a stripper - Don ends up moving into a retirement hotel serving scrambled eggs to the wise but hilarious elderly residents, alongside colorful drug addicts and dreamers. From Jeri Curls to Geritol - Cocaine Vapors to Vics Vapo-Rub - The 80's is all here!
And, yet again, we find even the outlaws and outsiders in our community have a moral compass that leads our most promising to higher ground and higher education. Very funny, definitely poignant — It's a stay in a hotel you'll never forget. Of Don's work publications have roared -The New Yorker - "Hilarious! The audience can't stop laughing." The San Francisco Chronicle described Reed as an "Irresistible presence, he shape shifts his face... to every race, gender and age." Don is a Double NAACP Theatre Award Nominee - Best Actor & Best Playwright --Best Bay Area Critics Circle Award Solo Performance nominee. 51Oakland was established in 2011 by Yoshi Akiba, co-owner of the renowned musical venues, Yoshi’s Oakland and Yoshi’s San Francisco, and Jason Hofmann, an Oakland-based entrepreneur and former educator who, since 2001, has been involved in philanthropic activities benefiting youth.
51Oakland, a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization, is organized and operated solely to promote educational, artistic and musical opportunities for youth in the Oakland community. 51Oakland provides access to mentoring, nurturing and training by professional musicians. The mission, simply put, is to inspire student learning, hard work, discipline and self-esteem by strengthening the role of music and the arts in the Oakland public school system. This is a grassroots organization being built not only with the vision of its co-founders, but, more significantly, with the input, ideas and creativity of the Oakland public school teachers, principals and the community at large.
