Singer Lavay Smith presents her Rhythm & Soul Revue at the Yoshi's Oakland Thursday November 7, 2013 In addition to Lavay, this old-school revue will feature soul legend Freddie Hughes ("Send My Baby Back") and blues sensation Big Bones, all backed by the Red Hot Skillet Lickers, Lavay's 7-piece touring band.
With her Rhythm & Blues Caravan, Lavay hosts a celebration of classic American music in the spirit of the legendary revues presented by Johnny Otis and record labels such as Motown and Stax. Soulful vocals, an all-star horn section featuring sax legend Jules Broussard, and a variety of classic grooves will make this an exciting night of high-energy music.
·The Los Angeles Times says that Lavay Smith has "A lush vocal style recalling both Bessie Smith and Dinah Washington", while the Boston Globe says that the Red Hot Skillet Lickers "sound as tight as the legendary musicians they choose to emulate." Rhythm & Blues pioneer Johnny Otis called Lavay and her band "a breath of fresh air".
·Freddie Hughes is a legendary singer from the golden age of soul music. His 1968 R&B smash hit "Send My Baby Back is a famous piece of falsetto virtuosity treasured by collectors the world over. A native of Oakland, CA, Freddie is a link to the giants of classic R&B.
