Performing in two shows at Yoshi’s will be the Northgate Jazz Band I, Jazz Band II, and Jazz Sextet, with featured guest, Latin percussionist/vocalist Edgardo Cambón.
Northgate jazz bands perform under the skillful direction of Greg Brown, Director of Instrumental Music and Performing Arts Chairperson at Northgate High School, Walnut Creek. Northgate’s comprehensive instrumental music program includes two levels of jazz bands, three levels of concert bands, a marching band, and a string orchestra.
With a director who sets the bar high, it’s no surprise why Northgate jazz bands are so polished. For the past five years, Jazz Band I has been one of only twelve bands selected from hundreds of nationwide auditions to perform at the Next Generation Jazz Festival in Monterey—the only Bay Area high school jazz band with that five-year run. Jazz Band I continues its award-winning tradition this year by taking first place at the Folsom Jazz Festival and the Campana Jazz Festival and receiving a Command Performance Award at the Santa Cruz Jazz Festival. It is also the only high school jazz band invited to perform June 1 at the Jazz on the Hill Festival, sponsored by Bay Area jazz radio station KCSM 91.1 FM. In recent years, Jazz Band I has had the privilege of performing with such esteemed guest artists as Bobby Shew, Mic Gillette, Edgardo Cambón, Dr. Aaron Lington, Mary Fettig, Bob Karty, Andy Martin, Scott Martin, and Stan Martin.
Individual students are selected often for district, county, and state honor music groups and receive many outstanding soloist and musicianship awards. Some of these students are among those who have formed the student-led Northgate Jazz Sextet. The sextet places high in competitions and receives kudos for its challenging repertoire, some of which has been composed by band members.
Finally, new to the ranks this year is Northgate’s Jazz Band II. In its first year, Jazz Band II took first place in its division at the Campana Jazz Festival and received a perfect score at the Santa Cruz Jazz Festival. We hope to secure funding for this talented group to continue next year and beyond.
Northgate High School Jazz Bands are honored to perform at Yoshi’s and are excited to share our music! This year’s repertoire includes the music of Gordon Goodwin, Francisco Torres, John Coltrane, Alan Baylock, Michael Philip Mossman, Oscar Pettiford, Bill Holman, and Count Basie.
