The Jazz Times calls him a “consummate pro” with a “nimble touch and reliably swinging grooves.” Jazzreview.com has named him “one of the foremost drum performers in modern jazz.” Akira Tana is truly a legend in the jazz world. The acclaimed drummer has worked with a long list of notables, from Art Farmer to Zoot Sims, Sonny Rollins to Sonny Stitt, James Moody to Lena Horne. He has played on scores of great recordings and produced dozens more, including several albums by Tana Reid, his artful collaboration with the bassist Rufus Reid. Tana’s Secret Agent Men Band features Annie Selleck, a stunning vocalist out of Nashville, and a phenomenally talented ensemble who play the music of James Bond in a way guaranteed to thrill and delight you.

Born and bred in San Jose, Akira Tana received degrees in East Asian Studies from Harvard University in 1974 and percussion from the New England Conservatory in 1979. A move to New York established him as one of today's most sought-after drummers on the international jazz scene.

Recognized for his ability to ignite the spark of many top rhythm sections and create pure musical dialogue with mainstay soloists, his colorful interactive style led to concert, club and recording work with a Who’s Who of jazz greats. He performed at the Tanglewood Festival under the direction of Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa and Gunther Schuller and has accompanied diverse artists such as Charles Aznavour, Maurice Hines and Van Dyke Parks on over 100 recordings. Tana has toured throughout the world and taught at colleges like the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Georgia, the University of Miami, and Berklee College of Music. One highlight of his work as a jazz educator was a concert-clinic tour of South America with the Heath Brothers, sponsored and presented through the U.S. State Department.

Recently relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area after 20 years in New York City, Tana tours internationally as well as performing locally in and around San Francisco with his own groups and groups led by others. He teaches privately and at San Francisco State University.  He also conducts clinics and masterclasses sponsored by Yamaha Drums and Vic Firth Sticks.

The scintillating secret is out:  tonight Akira Tana will bring the Secret Agent Men Band to the Yoshi’s stage to serve up a delicious banquet of urgent, delicate music powered by subtle and distinctive drum work, infused with the divine vocal mastery of Annie Sellick and full of great surprises.  We hope you’ll join the James Bond-themed fun at this memorable  party at Yoshi’s Jack London Square. You’ll be shaken AND stirred.
