Rez Abbasi

Pakistani-American, NY guitarist, Rez Abbasi is an emblematic figure in the globalization of jazz.  While firmly grounded in the jazz canon, his sound is informed by Indian & Pakistani music. Recently, Abbasi was commissioned by Chamber Music America to write new music specifically influenced by Qawwali, a spiritual music from the Sufi mystics of Pakistan. Much like Qawwali, Abbasi's music possesses a unique driving force, a broad dynamic range and a group cohesiveness that creates a deep sense of groove. Invocation's new recording is due out this October on the prestigious Enja label.
