Three of New York’s finest young players join forces with the bay area’s own, Peter Barshay for an evening of the music of Charles Mingus.
No stranger to the bay area, saxophonist Craig Handy was born in Oakland, and is an alumnus of Berkeley High School. Since moving to New York in 1986, he has worked with Abdullah Ibrahim, Betty Carter, Roy Haynes, and Art Blakey, to name a few. His huge tone and wealth of ideas make him an on demand player on the New York scene.
Pianist David Kikoski moved to New York in 1984, his first break came when Roy Haynes asked him to join his band. A relationship that continues today, in fact David played with Roy at the grand opening of Yoshi’s San Francisco. He has played or recorded with Randy Brecker, Joe Henderson, John Scofield, Tom Harrell, and the list goes on and on.
Philadelphia native Justin Faulkner is the new comer to the group. At 18 years of age, he has been the drummer in the Branford Marsalis quartet for the last year. He was named one of the five jazz drummers to watch by the New York Times.
Bassist Peter Barshay is a veteran bassist who has established a strong reputation over the years from his sideman work on both the New York City and Bay Area jazz scenes. He has performed with Milt Jackson, Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Stitt, Eddie Henderson, John Handy, Woody Shaw, Pharoah Sanders, Blue Mitchell, Tony Williams, Joe Henderson, Joe Lovano, Johnny Griffin and Bobby McFerrin.
This is not a working, touring band, but four individuals coming together to celebrate the music of Charles Mingus!
