Jazz Fest giant with Freedom at Yoshi's By Benedict Sinclair PREVIEW The blood of a certain Spanish heart will be found all over the Bay this month as Yoshi's opening San Francisco season follows two months of Jazz Fest giants with a week of Chick Corea, while the original Yoshi's in Oakland does the same. He's got two completely different bands in weeklong residences at each venue, an exciting prospect given that he's one of the most technically adept and creative keyboard warlocks to have emerged in the past 60 years. Still, his stylistic (and spiritual) choices have a way of floundering at times. It's sad but true: his cheese can often out-pungent his tri-tip's savor. That's why I'm recommending the Freedom over the Electrik Band — not that members from each aren't gems, but Corea has Brazilian percussionist Airto Moreira on his side in San Francisco, which means always-tasty Latin groove stewing, versus drummer Dave Weckl's awesome yet unfortunately histrionic flash in Oakland. Who here remembers Corea's stint with Anthony Braxton and Dave Holland in Circle — dropping keystrokes for Miles, his left hand scuttling across the Rhodes while his right twiddled the knobs on an echo box? I'm telling you: the boy used to be out there, way out. Though in light of his tendency to recruit for the Church of Scientology, I suppose he still is ... in a far less interesting way. At the end of the day, it really just depends on whom Corea's playing with and what instruments are going to be present for your tastes to match up with his that night.
