Northgate High School Jazz Bands
May 12, 2014
Monday, May 12
8pm $15 & 10pm $12
Enjoy an evening with the award-winning Jazz Band I, Jazz Band II, and Jazz Quintet from Northgate High School in Walnut Creek, under the direction of CMEA Outstanding Jazz Educator Award Winner 2013–2014, Greg Brown. Northgate has earned the distinction of performing at Yoshi’s in each of the past ten years! We also welcome back the talents of gracious mentor and fan-favorite featured guest, professional Latin percussionist/vocalist Edgardo Cambón.
With a director who sets the bar high, it’s no surprise why Northgate’s jazz bands are so polished. Among its honors, Jazz Band I was selected from nationwide auditions to compete in the elite 2014 Next Generation Jazz Festival in Monterey—the only Bay Area high school jazz band selected for the past six years. To top that, this year the band took first place in NGJF’s high school big band division and will perform at the world-famous Monterey Jazz Festival on September 21, 2014! Additional honors in 2013–2014 include winning first place at the Campana Jazz Festival and earning top scores at the College of San Mateo Jazz Festival, San Ramon Valley Jazz Festival, Folsom Jazz Festival, and Santa Cruz Jazz Festival. And for the second year in a row, the band was selected as the only public high school jazz band to perform at the 2014 Jazz on the Hill Festival on June 7, 2014, sponsored by Bay Area jazz radio station KCSM 91.1 FM.
In just its second year of existence, Jazz Band II has provided an exciting opportunity for additional high school students to perform and develop soloing skills in a rigorous jazz environment. Jazz Band II has been earning many honors in its own right, including first place and Command Performance awards at several jazz festivals and competitions. Jazz Band II has also performed in recent community events with the Big Band of Rossmoor and at the Mt. Diablo Music Education Foundation’s Music Festival.
Northgate’s list of accolades includes individual student awards for outstanding soloists, musicianship awards, summer music study scholarships, and by-audition placements in district, county, state, and national honor bands. Some of these students are among those who have formed the student-led Jazz Quintet. The quintet places high in competitions and receives kudos for its challenging repertoire.
These three Northgate jazz ensembles are honored to perform at Yoshi’s and are excited to share their music with you. This year’s repertoire includes a specially commissioned piece by Francisco Torres as well as the music of Count Basie, Eddie Cano, Hoagy Carmichael, Ornette Coleman, Chick Corea, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Bill Holman, Thad Jones, Blue Mitchell, Sammy Nestico, Radio Head, Snarky Puppy, George Stone, and Wayne Wallace.
