Legendary Percussionist Pete Escovedo is an artist who broke down the barriers between Smooth Jazz, Salsa, Latin Jazz and contemporary music. His name has been synonymous in the music industry for more than 50 years. Pete began his musical journey while attending high school in Oakland, CA. At the age of sixteen, he began playing the saxophone and then discovered percussion, which became his love of rhythm and his dream of playing Latin Jazz music.

Under the direction of Atemu Aton, The School of Instrumental Music at Oakland School for the Arts offers a dynamic curriculum with an overall emphasis in performance. Artists, composers and theorists offer instruction in all areas of performance while teaching courses in theory, history and literature. The goal of this department is to develop each student’s musical and intellectual potential to the highest degree of individual capability.

Oakland School for the Arts (OSA) provides an immersive arts program with a comprehensive academic curriculum, preparing students to lead with imagination, vision and ingenuity. A public charter school, OSA serves 668 students in grades 6-12, and is a model in the world of arts, education and community development for how the arts can play a transformative role.
