Mark Murphy 5th Annual Scholarship Concert

November 18, 2013

Monday, November 18
8pm $35
students (w/ID) & seniors (65+) $25

The Jazzschool Institute continues to honor legendary jazz vocalist Mark Murphy in an event to benefit an exceptional vocal student. The Mark Murphy Scholarship Fund was designed for this purpose and our Annual Scholarship Concert is one of the highlights of the year! Mark Murphy has been a mentor to so many Bay Area jazz singers and this celebration of his work has thrilled audiences and inspired performers alike. This year we are delighted to have five amazing vocalists join us to pay homage to Mark Murphy.

Rhiannon is a vocal artist with a vision of music as a vehicle for innovation, healing, transformation, and social change. From her stellar collaborations with the all-women’s jazz ensemble Alive! to a cappella ensemble SoVoSo’ to Bobby McFerrin and Voicestra, Rhiannon has paved a unique path. rhiannonmusic.com

“Pinpoint musicality, soaring invention and irresistible passion.” — Don Heckman, LA Times

Acclaimed for her inventive artistry and magnetic stage presence, Clairdee tours internationally playing to sold-out houses and garnering rave reviews. In addition to engagements with her world-class band, she has performed with artists as diverse as Bucky Pizzarelli, Boz Scaggs, Cyrus Chestnut and clarinet virtuoso Ken Peplowski. She has opened for the Count Basie Orchestra and the late, great Etta James. clairdee.com

“In the tradition of all great vocalists, Clairdee infuses her own unique style while always remaining true to the song itself.” — Nancy Wilson

Nicholas Bearde
The voice of Nicolas Bearde has delighted audiences around the world as a member of Bobby McFerrin’s renowned vocal ensemble Voicestra for over 20 years, while carving out his own unique style as a solo artist. Nicolas has performed, toured or recorded with McFerrin, Bernard Purdie, Patti Austin, Ray Obiedo, Janis Siegel, John Handy and Michael Bolton, gathering a global following with his vibrant interpretations. He is the definitive jazz romantic who brings a tenderness and delicacy to classic ballads. nicolasbearde.com

“A deeply soulful voice…A uniquely versatile entertainer” — Bobby McFerrin

Jackie Ryan
Ms. Ryan’s natural affinity for languages extends deeply into the language of jazz and its intricate structures. She possesses a keen ear for jazz phrasing and its internal rhymes – and, as a lyricist, has composed note-for-note vocalese to the scorching sax solos of Benny Carter’s “Doozy” and Joe Henderson’s “The Kicker.” jackieryanmusic.com

“One of the outstanding jazz vocalists of her generation and, quite possibly, of all time…rivaling the dexterous sass of Sarah Vaughan, the instinctive smarts of Carmen McRae and the scintillating verve of Diana Krall.” — Christopher Loudon, JazzTimes

Laurie Antonioli
Bay Area native Laurie Antonioli leads a multi-faceted career as both an acclaimed jazz singer and vocal educator. Leading groups in both the U.S. and Europe for four decades, Laurie has had the great fortune to perform or record with jazz luminaries including Joe Henderson, George Cables, Bobby McFerrin, Cedar Walton, Pony Poindexter, Richie Beirach and many others. Now getting ready to record her fifth CD, the music of Joni Mitchell, Laurie continues her eclectic, genre-bending endeavors with world-class musicians – while holding down an academic post as Vocal Chair at the prestigious Jazzschool Institute.

“When a girl of 17 or 18 wakes up in the morning and can start right off with a horn-like bebop solo, I know the bop angel has been at work again — that was Laurie Antonioli and she’s still doing it.” — Mark Murphy

Past performers include Joyce Cooling, Ann Dyer, Madeline Eastman, Kellye Gray, Ellen Johnson, Sheila Jordan, Kitty Margolis, Mark Murphy, Bobbe Norris, Ed Reed and Kenny Washington. Proceeds benefit the Mark Murphy Scholarship Fund and the Jazzschool encourages contributions to the Fund year-round. Please stay tuned for further announcements about this year’s artists and a great community event!
