The legendary Queens of Boogie Woogie are back for a 13th year of unpredictable, rollicking and soulful piano. Lady Bianca, Sue Palmer, Doña Oxford and Wendy DeWitt are this year’s award winning lineup of highly entertaining piano/vocal stylists. Yoshi’s in Oakland welcomes the Queens on Tuesday, April 2 at 8:00pm. The Queens of Boogie Woogie have a reputation for winning loyal audiences who return year after year to enjoy each artist’s unique mix of boogie woogie, soul, blues and r&b. With credits that range from Frank Zappa to Otis Rush to Les Nuits des Boogie Woogie, these internationally acclaimed Queens are back to celebrate the 13th season of the West Coast’s most entertaining piano celebration.

Lady Bianca is a member of the Blues Hall of Fame and has been crowned the New Queen of the Blues. She’s released seven CDs and three of them have been nominated for Grammies. Lady Bianca started her career as a background singer with Frank Zappa, Sly Stone, and Van Morrison. Taj Mahal is one of the many artists Lady Bianca has recorded with.
Lady Bianca is a great talent whose hearty, refreshing approach tugs at the heart while moving the feet. She stakes out a soul/blues/gospel territory uniquely her own. ~ David Freeland, Blues Review Magazine

Wearing a couple of pounds of big cocktail rings on each hand, Sue Palmer wails through a very complete blues keyboard vocabulary. Known widely as San Diego's Queen of Boogie Woogie, Sue has been honored for her cultural contributions by having a day named after her, won the International Blues Challenge Best Self Produced CD award, numerous San Diego Music Awards, and the Jim Croce Award for Excellence and Dedication to Music. Her lifetime favorite performance was a Boogie Woogie Extravaganza honoring the original Queen of the Boogie, 85 year old singer-songwriter-pianist Hadda Brooks who joined Sue, along with Bay area favorite Wendy Dewitt at San Diego's Dizzy's.
Her legs bowed intently, the laughter dancing above her fingertips, like a pool shark she is right on the money. Madame Palmer sets free the walking bass and the eight to the bar so inherent in this style of music. This musician possesses all the secrets of Boogie Woogie. ~ Le Monde, Paris

In a dramatic scene reminiscent of the life story of many a blues legend, Doña Oxford was born in a parking lot in the back seat of an old Chevrolet. Following this ominous introduction Doña has toured all over the world, performed on major motion picture soundtracks, and performed with such legendary performers as Keith Richards, Buddy Guy, Levon Helm, Hubert Sumlin, and her idol, former Chuck Berry sideman and Father of Rock & Roll Piano, Johnnie Johnson. It's all attitude, sultry good looks and a down and dirty beat.

Wendy DeWitt’s take on boogie woogie is equal parts Chicago blues and Texas boogie. Her mix of Otis Spann, Sunnyland Slim and Albert Ammons has garnered fans around the globe, top reviews, and live shows that leave the audience on it’s feet. “Tour de force performance” – Thomas J. Cullen III/Blues Revue

Wendy DeWitt initiated the first Queens concert in Berkeley 13 years ago and shows have spread to Arizona, Washington and down the coast to LA and San Diego, bringing together a vibrant group of women committed to continuing the tradition of high-energy piano as exemplified by Hadda Brooks and Hazel Scott. This Yoshi’s concert will give jazz, boogie woogie, and blues piano fans a night of romping soul satisfaction in California’s premier jazz club - a venue fitting The Queens.
