Mads Tolling Quartet
Mads Tolling Quartet
Mads Tolling is a two-time Grammy Award-winning violinist, and he is last year's winner of the DownBeat Critics Poll Rising Star Award. He is a former longtime member of Stanley Clarke's Band and the Turtle Island Quartet.

Mads has been featured on NPR’s Morning Edition and in the Washington Post, and he has performed with Kenny Barron, Ramsey Lewis and Paquito D’Rivera. In 2014 Mads was commissioned by Michael Morgan and Oakland Symphony to write a violin concerto, which was premiered at the Paramount Theatre to much fanfare in 2015.

Mads released "Playing the 60s" earlier this year, and Yoshi’s was the first stop on the CD release tour. The album has been a favorite amongst fans and critics alike, and was in the top 30 for two months straight on US Jazz radio. With his quartet, Mads has created a fun and exciting show that touches on the nostalgic as well as the contemporary. It includes timeless movie themes, popular TV classics, and celebrated songs ranging from “Mission Impossible”, “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” and “Meet the Flintstones” to “Georgia on My Mind” and “A Taste of Honey”.

This evening will feature a new collaboration with the internationally renowned vocalist Paula West, who like Mads has been featuring music from the 1960s, including Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger. Mads and Paula will find much common ground this evening at Yoshi’s.

As a burgeoning young master growing up in Copenhagen, listening to a Miles Davis cassette introduced Mads to the 60s sounds of Jazz, Soul and early R&B. Inspired to explore his own creative voice, the result is an exhilarating and thrilling musical adventure, with Mads guiding us to places we didn’t know a violin could go.

Joining Mads on this journey are his “Mads Men”: World-class musicians John R. Burr on piano, Dan Feiszli on bass and Colin McDaniel on drums.

Paula West
Paula West, an artist JazzTimes calls “the finest jazz-cabaret singer around” is known for her rich powerful contralto voice and for her unique interpretations of songs by artists as diverse as Simon and Garfunkel, Woody Guthrie, Glen Campbell and Pearl Bailey. The San Francisco treasure is not the kind of singer who uses her voice like an instrument, improvising long scat solos. West prefers to work around the edges of a melody, stretching a word here or clipping a phrase there so that each piece sounds as if it was written with her voice in mind.

When not enthralling Bay Area audiences, West has become a Manhattan fixture, regularly earning New York Nightlife Awards for “Outstanding Female Jazz Vocalist.” In 2013, trumpet luminary Wynton Marsalis recruited her to sing the lead role in the reprise of her Pulitzer Prize-winning opus Blood On the Fields. West has performed nationally and internationally at prestigious venues including Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Maison de la Musique and the White House. She has released four CDs and won three New York Nightlife Awards for “Outstanding Female Jazz Vocalist.”
