Yoshi's Celebrating 10th Year in Jack London Square

OAKLAND — Yoshi’s World Class Jazz Club & Japanese Restaurant has had a lot to celebrate during the month of May.

The month marks 10 years at its Jack London Square location, as well as 35 years of presenting jazz and Japanese cuisine in the Bay Area.

To commemorate the occasion, Yoshi’s launched a new web site and is releasing its first-ever compilation of various performances, entitled “Live at Yoshi’s: Anniversary Compilation.”

Yoshi’s worked with Concord Records to acquire songs performed by Marian McPartland, Poncho Sanchez, Joe Pass and Joey DeFrancesco. The CD also includes two rare, never-before- released tracks by Madeleine Peyroux and Robben Ford, both recorded by KFOG-FM for private concerts. The CD is available for sale on-line at (www.yoshis.com and at the box office. Additionally, there are merchandise and ticket giveaways to patrons at various shows throughout the month.

Yoshi’s began in 1973 as a small north Berkeley sushi bar owned by a trio of struggling students with plenty of dreams. In 1997, Yoshi’s was invited by the Port of Oakland to relocate to Jack London Square as part of a plan to revitalize the area. Together with Morimoto Architects, Yoshi’s built an award-winning 330-seat jazz club with a state-of-the-art sound system and design.

Occupying 17,000 square feet, the popular restaurant and lounge have a combined capacity of 220.

In 1998, Peter Williams was hired as the club’s artistic director. Under his leadership, the club has continued to present the finest in jazz, as well as world music, blues, neo-soul, Latin jazz and Afro-Cuban music.

In the fall of 2006, owner Kaz Kajimura decided that it was time to elevate the menu to the quality of the jazz by recruiting Executive Chef Shotaro “Sho” Kamio, one of the Bay Area’s top chefs, to make the change. Kamio brought a whole new generation of modern Japanese cuisine to Yoshi’s, which instantly put it on the map as a destination to dine in addition to being a place to hear great live music.

This fall, Yoshi’s will open its second location at the Fillmore Heritage Center, located at 1300 Fillmore St. at Eddy in San Francisco.

Yoshi’s is open for dinner only and features live music seven nights a week. The new hours of operation are: Monday to Thursday, 5:30 to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 5:30 to 10:30 p.m.; Sunday, 5 to 9 p.m. Further information is available on the web site or by calling (510) 238-9200.
